Mackay District Special School established a Resource Centre at the beginning of 2012, to collect school resources and locate them in a central location for all teachers and students to use. Resources from books to multidimensional resources are all labelled and libcoded to support a borrowing system.
Classes visit the library on a weekly basis to borrow their favourite books, toys, songs and digital learning games. This is a stepping stone as they rehearse good “library” behaviours before they go out into the community libraries to borrow materials for home.
Administrators and teachers select professional resource books to read and discuss. They share and guide use of exemplary resources with others.
The Resource Centre is presently being used as a training centre for our senior students to give them an opportunity to learn library skills which they may be able to use as they go into post school life.
