Mackay District Special School

Welcome to Mackay District Special School. This school has a history of catering for students with a diverse range of abilities and specific educational requirements. In 2014 our enrolment reached 88 students from prep to year 12 and there continues to be an upward trend with enrolments sitting presently on 95.

At Mackay District Special School we are committed to providing a caring environment that provides quality, individualised, needs-based programs in an alternative setting from P-12, where each student is encouraged and supported to reach their full potential. We deliver equitable opportunities for students with diverse needs.

We aim for quality educational outcomes, which will enable students to access the skills and knowledge necessary to participate in present and future society. We aim to provide the best possible climate where the whole school community can feel safe and happy, through skilled, sensitive interpersonal relationships.

Our AIP 2017 outlines where we are going and is a living document that is continually evolving.

As part of an initiative to improve student learning in Queensland state schools, school reviews are conducted in every Queensland state school to provide quality feedback on how the school is performing and to inform school planning processes. Please view the executive summary from the 2016 Reviewer's Report, also the fact sheet for parents and carers, the executive summary and the five-page profile for the 2014 Discipline Audit.
Please view the information guide for parents (PDF, 1291 KB) for further information regarding special education services provided by Education Queensland.
Under Investing for Success (I4S), Mackay District Special School will receive $66,420. The funding will be used to build staff capacity and school resources for planning and implementing curriculum programs that enable students to achieve their highest levels of competence in communication. It will also be used to increase student engagement in learning through embedding Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school wide practices.
