Mooockay moooooos the Judges!!

The Junior Secondary Phase Students stand proudly with Mooockay.

During the last two weeks of Term 1 the Junior Secondary Phase took on the challenge and joined in the fun of decorating a cow to enter into the 3rd annual Cow Art Competition that is part of the Ag.  Trade.  Life.  Show held at the Mackay Showgrounds each year. This event celebrates the strong agriculture we have in the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday areas. We purchased our cow the day after hearing about the competition and got to work on it within our Phase soon after. The $10 entry cost that purchased our cow was donated to the local Rotary Club, so thanks to each of the Junior Secondary staff who contributed to kick start this project.

Within each class we brainstormed and researched the local agriculture and then shared our knowledge. We represented our new found agricultural knowledge in a range of creative ways so it made sense to collage our cow with our entire collection of beautiful student made creations. It took us a few sessions of combined, collaborative messy work with lots of hands on deck to pull the project together… and boy did we do that. Our cow looked absolutely fabulous and we were so proud of the outcome that we collaged the back of the cow.
On Friday May 1, several students from the Junior Secondary Phase went along to the Ag. Trade. Life Show to see our cow whom we named Mooockay on display. Over 130 cows were decorated and on display in the field. It was a beautiful sight. We finally found Mooockay standing proudly on top of a hay bale in the Years 7-9 school section surrounded by the other entries in our category. We were even more ecstatic when we noticed a tag on Mooockay’s ear that said 1st! We all cheered and some even did a victory dance to celebrate the exciting moment. We then ate fairy floss and continued looking at all of the other decorated cows. Our prize for winning was $125 so our next Phase session will be deciding how best we can spend the prize money.
We all had a fabulous time at the Ag. Show and we can’t wait to enter again next year. We had such a lovely time working with our peers from other classes in our Phase and bringing all of our ideas together to create a masterpiece. A huge thank you to each of the Junior Secondary Phase students, teachers and teacher aides for all your effort. Thank you to Central Signs Mackay for being so enthusiastic about our entry; our guys really loved visiting your show throughout our Cow Art journey.
